GUIDE • LASER TECHNOLOGY
A medical laser is a device that uses a precisely controlled light beam to deliver energy to a target tissue. Wavelength, power, pulse duration, spot size and delivery mode largely determine how that energy interacts with tissue.
THE PRINCIPLE
LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Unlike an ordinary light source, a laser produces a highly directional and concentrated beam, generally associated with a defined wavelength.
An energy source excites an active medium. Stimulated emission amplifies the light and produces laser radiation.
Wavelength strongly influences how energy is absorbed by different tissue constituents.
Power, fluence, pulse duration, frequency, spot size and delivery mode all influence the resulting interaction.
TISSUE INTERACTION
A single beam is not suitable for every application. The effect depends on wavelength and delivery parameters as well as the properties of the target tissue.
A key factor in determining how energy is absorbed and how deeply it may act.
Continuous, long, short or extremely brief emissions produce different interactions.
The amount of energy and the area over which it is distributed contribute to the intensity of tissue interaction.
PROFESSIONAL APPLICATIONS
Medical lasers are used across many specialties. In dermatological and aesthetic applications, different architectures may be intended for hair removal, pigmentation, tattoo removal, resurfacing and other skin-related procedures depending on the device documentation.
Diode lasers are widely used in professional hair-removal systems.
