GUIDE • PHOTOBIOMODULATION

LED light: how does photobiomodulation work?

Photobiomodulation refers to techniques that use non-ionising light delivered with defined parameters. In professional aesthetic applications, different wavelengths may be used depending on the device, protocol and intended objective.

UNDERSTANDING THE TECHNOLOGY

Photobiomodulation and LED light

Photobiomodulation uses selected wavelengths and controlled light parameters. The intended effect depends on factors such as wavelength, irradiance, dose, exposure time and the treated area.

Red light

Frequently used in professional photobiomodulation protocols. Parameters depend on the device and its intended use.

Near infrared

Some professional platforms also use near-infrared wavelengths to address different tissue depths.

Blue light

Depending on the device and intended use, blue light can be included in protocols for certain skin-related applications.

IN PRACTICE

A technology that is different from laser

LED sources and lasers have different optical characteristics. Both can nevertheless be used in professional systems when the manufacturer defines the parameters and intended use precisely.

Controlled parameters

Wavelength, power, treatment time and distance are among the parameters that may influence a protocol.

Dedicated protocols

Use the protocols specified for the relevant device and indication.

Non-ablative approach

Photobiomodulation is generally used without tissue ablation. Expected effects depend on the specific device.
